Hello, my pretty little things!
Many of you still ask me how come each and every foundation I buy has the right color for my complexion. How do I manage to do that? Do I get my foundation on the Internet and if yes how is it that I choose the right color? In other words: you want to know how to correctly choose the foundation? How to match it with your complexion? Well, it’s not as difficult as you think it is. You just need to know a few simple rules. I hurry with the explanation for you my darlings. Make some tea, sit comfortably and read on!
The foundation – where to start?
Let me tell you how it was for me – at first, as a young girl, I got my foundation at a rough guess, so it looked something like that ‘yeah that is sort of like my skin shade, it’ll work’ and it obviously didn’t. The foundation I chose had an entirely different color and shade than my complexion. That is why before you even think of buying any foundation, please assess the undertone of your skin whether it is warm or cold. How to do that?
Take a look at your wrist. Do the veins under your skin have green or blue color? The rule is:
BLUE SHADE – COLD UNDERTONE
GREEN SHADE – WARM UNDERTONE
That is the base that will allow for the rest to go smoothly and in the right direction. Obviously, the skin with a warm undertone will look bad in the foundation with cold shade and the other way round. When you choose your foundation, pay attention to this aspect first.
There is also a group of neutral shade foundations that match every skin complexion but among them, you may not find the one that will be able to blend with your skin perfectly.
Once you determine your undertone, it is best to ask for some samples at the drugstore (take small cream-size jars with you) and take them home with you where in the daylight and with good lighting, you can apply it to the jawline. Do not test the foundation at the drugstore cause there the light is artificial.
You can also seek your beautician help in determining the right shade for you. Why is it so important? Besides the fact that it helps you avoid the mask effect where your face color differs from the rest of the body, it also makes future shopping easier.
Why is the color of your foundation so important?
A good foundation should camouflage imperfections while being invisible to the naked eye. You know what I mean – like its not the foundation at all but your skin being this flawless. Tricky business 😉
At the same time, a well-chosen foundation sets a color example for every foundation that will come after it. That is my secret to choosing the right foundation – by finding the right color of the first product (at home, in the good light, calmly testing more than 10 shades of various brands and types of foundations). Thanks to it, later on, I could go to the drugstore to get a product by a different brand and all I had to do was show the lady at the store my old cosmetic and we could together find twinning color. Then I applied sample to the face to see how it looked and reacted, whether it goes well with my complexion and is it easy to apply onto my favorite cream, etc. Test like that told me all I needed to know.
Ergo, if you want to get a good foundation matching your face and complexion:
- You need to assess whether you have a warm or cold undertone.
- You need to choose a foundation accordingly to the skin type – think what’s important for you, should it highlight, mattify, have good coverage or rejuvenate.
- You need to take samples and test them at home in good daylight.
- You need to apply the chosen product to the face and observe how it reacts throughout the day.
- You need to keep the jar or color number of the perfect product for future reference – it will make a purchase of the new product much easier.
- Lastly, you need to remember that some foundations oxygenate during the day and their shade may change during the day, that is why testing how it looks after a few hours of wearing is so important.
That’s all! Happy shopping 🙂
