Nowadays smooth legs aren’t enough – we have to remove hair from arms as well. Naturally, I’ve tried it a few times. Although I don’t do this anymore, this short episode bore some fruit. Now I know a few things about arm hair removal. Which one do I recommend most? Here are the more and less effective ways of removing hair from your arms.
Depilatory creams for arms
Depilatory cream allows you to remove hair – it leaves skin smooth. What makes the effects different from using a regular razor is that the hair that grows back doesn’t prickle and isn’t that stiff. A few years ago you had to allow the depilatory cream to sit on your skin for at least 15 minutes but, luckily, nowadays such products need only 3 minutes. Moreover, the present-day depilatory creams doesn’t smell chemicals, which was pretty nasty back then. Today this bad odor is camouflaged by synthetic aromas. Apart from this, depilatory creams often contain soothing substances such as honey, aloe juice, avocado and jojoba oil.
Disposable razor
Yep, disposable razor is both a really popular and at the same time really cheap method of removing unwanted hair from your body. Their biggest asset, apart from being extremely low-priced, is the speed of removing hair. Sadly, a disposable razor doesn’t serve its purpose when it comes to removing hair from arms because the blade causes irritations, encourages skin breaking out and appearance of open wounds that later may lead to infections and inflammations of follicles. On the top of that, the hair grows back harder, thicker and darker.
Arm waxing
Using wax to remove hair is one of the best methods of enjoying smooth arms for really long. Waxing strips allow us to get rid of unwanted hair and keep arms like that – I mean ‘smooth’ – for two or even three weeks. And this effect is achieved fairly quickly. Once your hair grows back, you can use wax again – providing that the hair is long enough. Unfortunately, using waxing stripes is painful and you may end up with irritated skin and allergic reactions. As far as I’m concerned, synthetic wax often causes allergic reactions such as small spots that luckily disappear the next day. Still, those who haven’t mastered the art of removing hair due to wax should ask a professional beautician for help. If ripped off unskillfully, a waxing strip may upset your skin and even cause blotches. Last but not least, arm waxing should be avoided if you suffer from some skin problems and broken capillaries.
Sugaring
Sugaring is almost the most effective hair removal technique to enumerate here. Firstly, the paste is natural (sugar and lemon juice). Secondly, the effects achieved are comparable with waxing but without suffering the nasty aftermath (no irritations or allergic reactions). Thirdly, hair is removed way easier therefore the risk of blotches or skin damage is significantly reduced. On the flip side, even though it’s simple to make your own paste at home, you must know how to do it correctly. Additionally, hot paste might scald you. These two reasons advocate for arranging a meeting with a beautician.
Epilator
Using an epilator makes one of the cheapest hair removal techniques. Sadly, it has some drawbacks: it’s painful and noisy which is why you shouldn’t use the tool at night. Of course, the fact that epilator removes hair with its bulb works for its advantage since this ensures smooth arms for long. On the other hand, it increases the risk of ingrown hair which leads to inflammation of follicles. What’s more, open wounds are fast to get infected and taking care of such skin irritations is really complicated and time-consuming.
When it comes to the effectiveness of removing hair due to epilator, it takes approximately three weeks for the hair to grow back. The good thing though is that you can spot less hair growing back on your arms. Another issue worth mentioning is that the present-day epilators come with various soothing heads to make the procedure less painful.
Laser hair removal
This method depends on releasing a beam of laser that penetrates skin and destroys hair bulbs. This procedure consists of a few sessions that have to be carried out every year to achieve the best results – complete hair removal. For that reason, laser hair removal is the most expensive procedure of getting rid of hair. What are other drawbacks – apart from the high cost – of laser hair removal? Firstly, it’s rather painful. Secondly, it leaves skin irritated (it takes a few days for skin to recover). Thirdly, there are some contraindications to exposing the skin to laser. I should enumerate pregnancy, chronic diseases and taking some medications (antibiotics, antidepressants, retinoids and anticoagulants).
