Trip to a perfumery. How to choose a fragrance to make the right purchase?

Some people like visiting perfumery but when it comes to choosing perfumes, the majority of us either kick the can down the road or buy fragrances online. Indeed, choosing the right aroma for ourselves is troublesome and frequently makes our head spin round (sometimes even literally). What’s the best way to match a fragrance with our personality? Here is a short guide that will help you find a nice phial of perfumes.

Choosing the right type of perfumes quickly and effectively is mission impossible – just by entering the pharmacy we are immediately bewildered by the aromas. How to, among dozens (or even hundreds) of products, choose the one that suits us and makes every day more pleasant? Without doubt, this is pretty troublesome. Fortunately, there are a few tips that we can follow to make this task easier.

Get yourself ready. What will you need?

Firstly, you must clearly define what you really need. If you want to get yourself a phial of good perfumes without spending an entire day on this task, you must know what type of aroma you will be looking for. Having this aim defined, you will make the whole process a lot easier. Therefore, right at the beginning, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you looking for perfumes to wear it daily, to work or is there some big life event that you need it for?
  • Do you prefer light, fruity and flowery aromas or rather heavy and musky ones?
  • Do you have any memories attached to a particular aroma?
  • Are there any aromas that you simply enjoy smelling?

Once you collect these few pieces of information, you will narrow the choice to the fragrances that truly suit you. Also, when you explain clearly to a shop assistant what your expectations are, they will guide you to the right display.

The best time for choosing a fragrance

Of huge importance is the time of a day you plan to visit a perfumery at. You shouldn’t just get into a car and go to a perfumery whenever you feel like getting yourself a nice phial of perfumes. The fact whether you will enjoy particular fragrances is determined by many factors, and there are many of them which we aren’t even aware of.

What is the best part of a day to visit the perfumery? In the morning, just when the perfumery opens its doors for the clients. This is the time when the air isn’t filled with hundreds of fragrances tested throughout a day. Additionally, in the morning we are well-rested so our sense of smell works better. A morning visit in a perfumery has yet another advantage – you will check the longevity of particular fragrances and whether they smell different in the evening.

NOTE! Remember not to apply any fragrances before visiting a perfumery. You should test new aromas on fresh and clean skin only.

Tips. How to choose perfumes?

To do it right, you can’t be in a hurry. A quick visit in a perfumery often ends up with us choosing a fragrance that we aren’t really keen on later.

Therefore, if you really want to buy good perfumes, reserve yourself more time. It will be useful because you need to make a short break, e.g. go for a walk, after smelling a few aromas. The sense of smell has its limits and it must rest pretty often. Our nose gets easily overburdened after being exposed to a few aromas in a short period of time. As a consequence, your perception might be distorted.

  • MYTH! One of the common beliefs is that you shouldn’t smell more than three aromas during one visit in a perfumery. It can be true but not for everyone. Each one of us has a different susceptibility to aromas, therefore for some of you smelling three fragrances might be too much, whereas other are totally fine with testing even twenty various fragrances during one visit.
  • TIP! You shouldn’t be afraid to ask a shop assistant for help. In most cases, people working there are well-trained and qualified, which means that they should be able to help you after having a quick chat with you. Just be honest and tell the shop assistant what you are looking for, how you want to smell, what fragrances you have been using lately and what are your likes and dislikes.
